The rivers : The Tarn and the Jonte

The Gorges du Tarn et de la Jonte

The Canyons refer to the valleys carved through the thick limestone deposits and are called ‘GORGES’. The ‘Gorges du Tarn’ with cliffs up to 500m high, are the main touristic site in the region. The best way to plainly appreciate the beauty of the ‘Gorges du Tarn’ is while kayaking down the river since the Canyons are only accessible from the river.

The Grands Causses : Méjean and Sauveterre

The large limestone plateaux of the ‘Causses’ where the rocks give the landscape a particularly very rugged aspect : the dry and arid plateaux, the gigantic trenches of the Canyons, the Avens where villages are built of limestone

The Cévennes

South of the Massif Central, the Cevennes offer a great variety of different landscapes. Their quality has been created by centuries of work from the generations that have lived and survived and will give the traveler memorable impressions. Nature in the Cevennes, thorugh out the different seasons will always offer its secrets to the alert and respectfull discoverer.

National Park of the Cévennes

It is the only inhabited National Park and ranked as a worldwide biosphere reserve. It allows the preservation of the landscape, the plant and wild life such as the large birds of prey (royal eagle, circaète jean le blanc...), the deer, mountain sheep, ... Its headquarters are located in the castle of Florac. Its management promotes the diversity of the different animal and plant species, as well as its landscapes.

The Mont Lozère

This land of extremes, it offers a never ending strem of strong emotions. Prehistorical, roman and medival sites are testimonies of the historical bonds between man and this mountain. Birthplace of a rich culture, ingrained in the landscape, with its trails, villages, terrasses, slopes and fields which are the fruit of the interaction between man and nature.

The Mont Aigoual

The Massif de l’Aigoual is an average size granite mountain (1567m). Its rainy side (Aigoual means rainy in the local dialect) can receive up to 2000 mm of water over 250 days of rain fall per year and wind can reach up to 200km/h. Its forest is a refuge for a large number of animal and palnt species. Numerous outdoors activities are available : hiking, mountain biking, ...

The caves : Aven Armand, Dargilan, Abîme de Bramabiau

The Aven Armand is a chasm or sinkhole of the Causse Méjean, the "pink cave" Dargilan is located on the Causse Noir, the abyss of Bramabiau is an underground river goign through the Causse de Camprieu. Spelanking was invented in this region by E.A. Martel.

Sainte Enimie

Medieval village, belonging to the list of most 100 beautifull french villages. The Legend of Ste Enimie, the cobberstone streets, the roman church Notre Dame, the Vieux Logis museum, the gothic bridge, the ermitage (overlooking the village) where the grave of the sainte islocated make of this village an unique site.
Ste Enimie is the gate to the Gorge du Tarn but also the gateway between the Causse de Sauveterre and the Causse Méjean.

Millau

2000 years ago, pot makers installed in ‘Condatomagus’, the city of the confluence, were exporting their manufacture in all the Roman empire.
The industries of the animal skin and the glove have made and continue to make the reputation of Millau.
The many sports activities and of leisures which one can practise in marvellous landscapes, make of Millau a fundamental attraction for tourism.

Fawn-coloured vultures, wolves of Gévaudan, bisons of Europe, the horse of Przewalski

In the Gorges of the Jonte, approximately 200 couples of fawn-colored vultures are visible while hiking on the Causse Méjean.
The park of the Wolves of Gévaudan, located close to Marvejols, enables you to discover this mythical animal fromLozere.
Bisons of Europe of Holy Eulalie, as there were some several centuries ago. But also of the Bisons from America as from the times of the Indians.
The horse of Przewalski, prehistoric équidé between the ass and the horse, reproduces on the Méjean Causse before being reintroduced its medium of origin, the Mongolian steppes.

The discovery of the country side through its inheritance

- The teaching farm of Boissets:
On the edge of Causse Sauveterre, overhanging the Gorges of the Tarn, this hamlet representative of the rural architecture caussenarde is a center of interpretation which presents all the aspects of the human activity: architecture (stone, the work of the stone...), breeding (the sheep-fold, sheep...), fauna and flora, water (ponds, underground cistern, rivers...), life on the causse and in the valley.
